“art sex music” Cosey Fanni Tutti

Spent the last couple of days reading this book. All I’ve got to say, Cosey Fanni Tutti, what an absolute inspiration!! From front to back this book is inspiration! From her stories of her early days in COUM Transmissions, to the forming of Throbbing Gristle and Industrial Records Ltd, to the Chris & Cosey years… to the reforming of Throbbing Gristle, then X-TG.

This book I had known about for a couple of years, but before I purchasing it, I was going to read “Wreckers of Civilisation” by Simon Ford… but Youtuber (that I highly recommend following) ThisMachineKillsMusic recommended in one of her videos to read Cosey’s book first… Which in her reasoning, I felt was a solid suggestion. Sooo, I decided to pick up “art sex music” aaaaand there is sooo much goddamn inspiration in this book!!

Here’s the blurb on GoodReads:

Art Sex Music is the autobiography of a musician who, as a founding member of the avant-garde group Throbbing Gristle and electronic pioneers Chris & Cosey, has consistently challenged the boundaries of music over the past four decades.

It is the account of an artist who, as part of COUM Transmissions, represented Britain at the IXth Biennale de Paris, whose Prostitution show at the ICA in 1976 caused the Conservative MP Nicholas Fairbairn to declare her, COUM and Throbbing Gristle ‘Wreckers of Civilisation’ . . . shortly before she was arrested for indecent exposure, and whose work continues to be held at the vanguard of contemporary art.

And it is the story of her work as a pornographic model and striptease artiste which challenged assumptions about morality, erotica and art.

Art Sex Music is the wise, shocking and elegant autobiography of Cosey Fanni Tutti.”

If you are into industrial music, and want to know more of the history of how pioneering band Throbbing Gristle came about and the industrial music genre… I would highly recommend this book!
